Adware :

It is a classification for software that can be used to show advertisements or gather user data that can be used for marketing purposes.

Many adware applications can only be perceived as “annoying” while others can pose a real threat to user’s personal data as some adware producing companies even state in the End-User License Agreement (EULA) that any collected data can be sold to third parties.

It is a classification for installers that display third party offers at run time, sometimes by analyzing user data, installed applications or by using geolocation detection.

This usually requires sending information to a server and receiving a list of offers or dynamic code to be executed on the user’s machine. This data exchange is sometimes done before allowing the user to read and accept the End-User License Agreement (EULA) and privacy policy. Bundlers can use social engineering techniques in order to increase their monetization by tricking the users into installing software provided as an offer.

It is a classification for commercial Keyloggers or legitimate applications with the ability to record user input or other information. This kind of software is usually legitimate and installed with the user’s approval or enforced by company policy. There are also cases where these applications are installed without user knowledge and used to steal information like credit card data or incriminatory information.
